About this publication

Why NRIFolio exists

If you earn in one country and hold money, property, or family obligations in India, you live under two financial systems at once. The rules that govern that overlap — FEMA, DTAA treaties, NRE and NRO account regulations, FBAR, PFIC — are genuinely complicated, and most of what’s written about them is either US-centric, out of date, or written to sell you something.

NRIFolio is a publication, not an advisory. We read the circulars, the treaty texts, and the regulator FAQs, and translate them into plain English for Indians living in the United States, the Gulf, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Where a rule differs by corridor, we say so. Where the honest answer is “it depends on your situation,” we say that too, and tell you what it depends on.

Who this is for

The NRI who wants to understand the rule before sitting down with a professional — or before deciding they need one. Our readers include H-1B holders confronting their first FBAR, Gulf workers deciding between NRE and NRO routing, and families planning a return to India after decades abroad. What they share is a preference for the actual rule over a confident guess.

Editorial standards

Three rules govern everything we publish. They are not aspirations; an article that fails any of them does not ship.

Every numerical claim links to a primary source. Thresholds, deadlines, tax rates, penalty amounts — each one is cited inline to the government or regulator document that states it: RBI, the Indian Income Tax Department, the IRS, FinCEN, HMRC, the CRA, the ATO. If we can’t source a claim, we don’t make it.

Every article carries a review tier and a date. Regulations change, and an undated tax article is a liability dressed as help. The “last reviewed” date on each article means a human re-checked its claims against the sources on that date.

We publish information, never advice. We will tell you what the repatriation limit is and where it’s written. We will not tell you what you should do — your residency history, treaty position, and family situation change the answer in ways no article can responsibly cover.

The review tiers

T1 · Editorial

Definitional and process content — what an account type is, how a form works. Verified against primary sources by the editorial team.

T2 · Spot-checked

Articles with specific thresholds, deadlines, rates, or penalties. Key claims are individually spot-checked against the cited sources.

T3 · CA-reviewed

Complex or jurisdiction-specific analysis. Reviewed by a chartered accountant with NRI specialization before publication.

Affiliations and money

NRIFolio may earn commissions from remittance and banking services mentioned in some articles. Any article containing affiliate links says so at the top. Affiliations never determine what we cover or what we conclude — and most of our articles contain no affiliate links at all.
